Details

2008 CSR Award Nominee Caesar XL is another fine offering from veteran game designer Joe Miranda which transports its players back to the waning days of the Roman Republic as it is plunged into civil war. Julius Caesar stands poised on the banks of the Rubicon River that he must cross to win Rome, while opposing him stands Pompey Magnus (Pompey the Great) and the mighty forces loyal to him.

In this great clash between rival factions, the Populares (those "favored of the people") and Optimates (the "best men") must find their champion and either preserve the Senate and Republic or call forth a Dictator to deal with Rome's pressing problems; perhaps making him king!

Players can quickly master the game's XL (the Roman numeral for "40") cards and counters via the Bronze Rules and have their Legions and great Leaders contesting Rome's territories for ultimate domination before you can auger a chicken's entrails. Building upon that are the Silver Rules that every great conqueror should know before donning the purple and staging their triumph through the streets of Rome. Hail!

Roman Civil War in 90 minutes by Prufrock (Here's No Great Matter)
It's turning out to be a fine little game, even when played solo, which is especially good for me. There are some lovely little touches such as legions being able to increase in experience over time and the cards add in some nice twists and a bit of historical flavour. ... I'm only one play in but indications are it will be a keeper. You never know, on candlelit occasions with the kids in bed I may even be able to convince my wife to give it a go!
Can Good Things Come in Small Packages? by Mark D. (The Boardgaming Life)
Let me kick off the summary by saying that this is an incredibly enjoyable and addictive game.

I am primarily a hard-core, half-inch-hex only type of war gamer, but Caesar XL really grabbed my interest… and held it! It’s the type of board game that has you mentally plotting the moves of your next game, within minutes after the current game is finished. All too many games these days, many of them beautifully crafted and polished, leave you feeling almost relieved that you’re done playing, but Caesar XL leaves you wanting to play again.

I highly recommend this game. All the gamers who played Caesar XL with me felt the same way, without exception. Apparently good things definitely can come in small packages!
